Over the years many have approached me asking how they could get champagne publicity on a beer budget.  I tell them the answer is quite simple... "you must work smarter instead of harder" it's a simple idea I know, but one that most refuse to adopt even though many have heard it before.

Here's only one of the many ways to easily gain publicity for any business, idea, service or whatever you wish to market.  I live in Richmond, VA where we have our share of restaurants. One day years ago, I was sitting in a small diner about an hour outside of Richmond and I overheard two people talking about an ad they saw on the place mats that were on each table.  The two were saying how they might go by the particular business after their meal etc.  I also heard them talking about how they never knew that particular business was in town.

What does this say about the importance of marketing yourself?

Anyway, I asked my waitress if I could take the place mat that adorned my table with me.  She told me "you sure can, people take them all day long!"  with a great big smile on her face. She then added "we get tons of business from people who then see the mats after people pass them around."  I went to the business the couple had earlier spoke about and asked the owner how long she had been at that location.  She told me she had been there for almost three years.  I then asked how business had been over that three year period.  Before I could even ask her about the success of her place mat ad, she told me although she had been there for three years, this year was her best due to the place mat advertising she was doing at the diner.

This gave me reason to think about something I was surely missing out on.  For those of you who do not know me or haven't seen one of our national television, radio, magazine, or newspaper ads, I thought I had most of my publicity bases covered.  We are constantly promoting.

When I got back home I traveled around to several of the local restaurants looking for someone else doing what I now wanted to do with the place mats.  Guess what, nobody was doing it!  In the next couple of weeks that followed, I sat down and made calls to many in town pretending to be a possible customer.  I called ad placement companies like "Val-Pac" and many others that offer coupon ads etc.  I compiled all of their rates. Next I called area printers and found one that would give me the best price to print 10,000 place mats in two colors.  With my rate sheet done and a printer eagerly awaiting my new business, I was ready to go out and test this stuff.

On a Monday morning I went to Broad street which is one of the "main strips" running through Richmond.  I approached a seafood restaurant.  I noticed they already had place mats on their table however the mats were plain white with a generic stamp on them.  I asked the owner where he got them.  He told me there is a company that sells them to restaurants up and down the east cost and that he pays around $30.00 a month for them and his name is stamped on them.  As we talked further I asked if it were possible that other seafood restaurants in nearby areas also bought their mats from this same company and like him used the same background design.  He looked at me knowing exactly what I was getting at and answered, "yes and I don't really like that aspect of it but I need mats for my tables."

He then was practically begging me to ask him about letting me put place mats on his tables.  The long and short of it is he jumped at the chance when I told him I would give him 10,000 mats FREE of charge and that all he had to so is sign a contract with my company agreeing to use them until they were all gone.  He happily agreed and I was in business!

I then made 6 cold calls and had sold three ads before noon!  I had earned over $750.00 and it was practically the easiest thing I had ever done when it comes to advertising.  It took me three more days to sell the remaining spaces on the place mats.

Now... here comes the BEST part!

I designed MY OWN ADVERTISEMENT and placed it on these 10,000 place mats along side all the others I had sold earlier.  Not only would my advertisers get 10,000 people LQQKing at their ads but SO WOULD I.  I had them printed and then delivered to the restaurant.  A few days went by and I called a few advertisers to see how the response was.

The first advertiser I called said they had gotten a few calls. The second advertiser said they were pleased and might want to place a larger ad next time as they had seen others on the mat that came up with neat ads.  What happened next blew me away! The third advertiser I contacted asked me if I would work up a special deal if he agreed to run an ad on not only this restaurant but ALL others that I did!  Well, of course I said with a huge grin on my face YES !

Now I will briefly explain here that it costs very little to have the mats printed and I had easily earned enough from selling the ads the very first day to pay for the printing. The rest was ALL profit.  In fact here's a few figures for you to consider...

$937.63 / 5 days !   $1,071.66 / 3 days !   $1,096.26 / 4 days!  I made a profit of $3,105.55 in just 3 weeks + 30,000 people guaranteed to see my ads for FREE ! Where else can you do this?

Well to bottom line it, I now have 7 restaurants and that means that at any given time 70,000 people SEVENTY THOUSAND people see my ads day after day!  What does it cost me?  NOTHING, NATTA, ZILCH, ZIPPO, not 1 thin dime!

I now have this down to a science, I call my advertisers when it's time to print more place mats for a particular restaurant and the advertisers have a check waiting for me to pick up to run their same or bigger ads again and again!  I rarely do any cold calls at all now !  I even have some advertisers that call me saying they have found another restaurant willing to accept FREE place mats and they want me to sign the restaurant up! I smile at this cause I know that it translates into $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and FREE publicity for me !
